What is Assistive Technology?
Any item, piece of equipment or product system used to increase, maintain or improve functional capabilities of individuals with disabilities.

How does the lab keep abreast of technology?
Some hardware and software items have been donated by vendors who choose to use Michiana as a demonstration site. Financial support in the form of grants has been received from varies sources. Support like this is always appreciated; please contact the AT Coordinator if you would like to help.

Community Assistive Technology Services
Services may include assisting an individual or family in the selection, acquisition, or use of an AT device; providing information about, referrals for, and observations of assistive technology devices; and/or exploring alternative strategies. These strategies may include use of AT in:
  • Communications
  • Environmental Control
  • Mobility
  • Education and Training
  • Daily Living Activities
  • Recreation
  • Transportation
  • Other Community Related needs as defined by persons served or their families

Community AT Services are closely coordinated with Case Manager

Employment Assistive Technology Services
Services include assisting an individual in the selection, acquisition, or use of an assistive technology device; providing information, referrals, and observations of devices, and/or exploring alternative strategies. Computer skills assessment and training is also available to help prepare an individual for employment, vocational training or higher education. Basic Training is offered in Windows, word processing, keyboarding, internet access, spreadsheet and data entry.
Other software application training is available upon individual request and/or needs.
