Creative Concepts

Creative Concepts, which began in 2004, opened a new art studio and gallery in 2008 with future plans for a gift shop. The program is under the direction of Art Instructor - Kelly Tokoly-Rothermel, who is a licensed K-12 visual art teacher. All of the Creative Concept art is displayed throughout the Michiana Resource building. It’s open from 7:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., weekdays. Most of the art displayed is for sale. Half of all sales go to the artist, the other back into the program. All of sales of group projects go back into the program.

Our past exhibit participation includes the Lubeznik Center for the Arts, Purdue North Central, the Framing Station, the Michiana Humane Society, and the Indiana Welcome Center. Past festival participation includes the Lakefront Art Fest, Old Towne Fun Fest, Sunflower Fest, and the Chesterton Art Fair. Past play production includes Cat’s, the Wizard of Oz, and Snow White. Field trips have been taken to various art museums, galleries, and universities.

For almost the entire year of 2008, Purdue North Central has hosted a different monthly art exhibit by Creative Concepts. There was a different theme for each show, and pieces were carefully selected and prepared to ensure that as many Creative Concepts participants as possible got a chance to exhibit. Our artists also had the opportunity to go on a field trip to their show’s opening reception.

The Visiting Musician’s Program is under construction, and will feature some regional professional performers that will come in to demonstrate their instruments. We are hoping to expand from our rhythm instruments to a full band! We love to dance and have learned everything from the Chicken Dance to the Cupid Shuffle! Creative Concepts is always looking for volunteers to join in our fun.

Mission: to provide experience in visual art, theatre, music and dance for individuals with disabilities.
A lakefront lighthouse mural has been planned for our building’s courtyard. We would like to use everybody’s handprints for the water!
Some of our participants also have had the opportunity to take classes at the Lubeznik Center for the Arts in Michigan City, and Art-ability in South Bend.
